Paintings
on old boat parts are one of a kind and there are never two exactly
alike. Deborah finds these interesting pieces along the ocean and
river shores of the maritime provinces.
As well, people often think of her when beach combing, and she often will return home from away to find interesting pieces on her doorstep, or a phone call as to where to pick such pieces up. A lot of the irregular pieces are from the wheelhouses of abandoned fishing boats that are left to rot on our shores. When possible she likes to leave the back with only a coat of varnish so that people can see the interesting colors the boat was painted over the years. Sometimes the pieces are so old that you can still see some old square nails. The wood is then stored to dry. When ready, the pieces are worked on by Deborah to prepare for painting. The piece of wood is then primed and put on the easel for her to study while looking through her many photographs to find the maritime scene that is meant for that particular piece of wood. The character of the piece of wood often determines what is to be painted on it. Some of the pieces that have straight edges are hatch covers from the boats. At times when she has been lucky enough to find the stern out of an old river boat, she will paint on it and turn it into a bench. Whenever you check back on this site, you may be surprised to find some interesting and unique pieces.
